NOTE: This excursion is organized independently by local community-based conservation groups and is not part of the official MMM7 scientific program.
“Nagura Amparu” is a subtropical mangrove wetland on Ishigaki Island. It is also the southernmost Ramsar Site in Japan ( (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xn5k_zqw-lI).
We are members of local community-based conservation groups, namely:
Amparu Nature Conservation Society: a volunteer group dedicated to raising awareness of the natural beauty of Amparu and the environmental issues affecting the area.
Ishigaki Island Crested Serpent Eagle Habitat and Forest Conservation Group: a group working to protect the habitat of the Crested Serpent Eagle and the surrounding forest ecosystems on Ishigaki Island.
On the occasion of MMM7 being held on Ishigaki Island, we will organize a guided tour to Nagura Amparu on 30 June 2026 as a pre-conference excursion for MMM7 participants.

[Meeting Point]: Parking Area (Behind the conference venue, not the main entrance (map)), Ishigaki City Civic Hall
[Cost]: Free
[Participation condition]: Participants must agree to photo/video recording, possible media coverage, and a short interview within or after the tour.
[Maximum number of participants]: 15 people
Transportation:
Transportation will be provided using private vehicles driven by volunteer staff members.
What to Bring:
- Marine shoes or rubber boots, or other shoes that can get wet and walk into muddy soil.
- Please note that sandals are not allowed, as participants will walk through muddy areas
- Drinking water
- Hats
- Towel
- Clothes that can get wet or dirty
- Insect repellent, if needed
Important Notes:
This is an outdoor field excursion in a mangrove wetland. Participants should be prepared to walk through wet and muddy areas.
Sun and Heat Protection: Summer in Ishigaki is extremely hot, with strong sunlight. Participants are expected to prepare their own sun and heat protection, such as sunscreen, a hat, long-sleeved clothing, and sufficient drinking water.
Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing for field conditions.
The tour may be changed or canceled in the event of bad weather or unsafe field conditions. In case of inclement weather or unsafe field conditions, we will notify registered participants by e-mail by 11:00 AM on the day of the tour.
Please follow the instructions of the guides and volunteer staff during the tour.
The number of participants is limited. If the number of applications exceeds the available capacity, participants will be selected by lottery.
Please note that this tour will be guided by volunteer staff members. As they may not be fluent in English, guidance will be provided with the assistance of a translation app. We appreciate your understanding.
IMPORTANT: Please read the following information carefully before applying for the tour.
This guided tour includes an introduction to Nagura Amparu and its surrounding environment to the MMM7 participants. The tour organizers are also conducting a campaign to stop the planned golf resort development in the headwaters of Nagura Amparu. Please note that an explanation of this campaign will be included in the tour.
Photos and videos may be taken during the tour and may be used on websites, social media, and or other public communication materials related to the tour organizers’ conservation activities. Local media may also be present to cover the event.
After the tour, participants may be asked to take part in a brief interview for a few minutes. The interview may also be used for public communication and conservation outreach.
We will bring a basic first-aid kit for emergencies during the mudflat tour. However, please note that this is an outdoor activity in a natural environment. Participants are expected to take responsibility for their own safety and to follow the instructions of the guides and volunteer staff. While every effort will be made to ensure a safe tour, the organizers cannot be held responsible for any injuries, accidents, loss, or damage that may occur during the activity.

Please note that the number of participants is limited due to transportation capacity. If the number of applications exceeds the available capacity, participants will be selected by lottery. All applicants will be notified of the selection results by e-mail by 12:00 on 10th June.
